Atlantic Academy recognises it’s moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all students.  We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued.  We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect, and follow our procedures to ensure that children receive effective support, protection and justice.

What is Safeguarding and Child Protection?

When we think about protecting children from harm, we refer to two measures.  These are:

  1. Safeguarding;
  2. Child Protection.

Safeguarding is the action taken to promote the welfare of all children and keep them safe from harm. Safeguarding is different from Child Protection.

Child Protection is the specific action taken to protect individual children who have been identified as suffering, or likely to suffer significant harm.

The NSPCC website provides a very good summary of what safeguarding means.  It can be found by clicking here.

Safeguarding procedures during Covid-19 school closures

Our safeguarding procedures have been adapted during the current period of school closures.  we are maintaining contact with students on a regular basis through a variety of methods, including econtact book, google classroom, email and telephone.  Information relating to contact arrangements can be found here.

Where a student has not engaged in learning, or been in touch with teachers directly, we will use the school comms system to notify parents.  Please download the school comms app to receive direct notifications from Atlantic Academy.  The flow chart below shows the timeline we will use to ensure students are maintaining contact with their teachers.  Please note some subjects have one lesson per week, therefore contact would not be escalated until a student has not been in touch for 2 weeks.  In other subjects, parents will be notified that week that a student has not engaged in learning.

Many young people are using digital platforms to maintain contact with friends, families and to take part in activities.  Please take this opportunity to refresh your eSafety procedures at home.  This resource has lots of useful information.

We are currently amending our safeguarding policy and will publish it on this site shortly.
